Who We Are

We are a dedicated 40+ member team from students to retirees who read the Mankato Free Press. We broadcast the written word, intended exclusively for the visually impaired in Minnesota and across the nation via podcast processed in St. Paul, MN. The Mankato Newspaper Reading Project is heard seven days a week from the Intergovernmental Center, downtown Mankato.

We strive to have team members read the local news from the Mankato Free Press one evening each month starting between 6:30 and 7:00pm.

What We Do

The Mankato Newspaper Reading Project is a part of the Radio Talking Book (RTB) Network. RTB is a State Services for the Blind (SSB) service intended for the use of blind, visually-impaired and print-disabled persons. RTB shares a wide variety of print materials with its target audiences so that people can be well-informed, participate in their communities and continue to live independently. For many years, listeners accessed RTB through a proprietary radio receiver as well as online through our live stream and archive. In Oct 2020, we transitioned away from broadcasting over the radio. Now listeners can access RTB through our app for Apple and Android, and via our Alexa skill.
