Harry Meyering Center, Inc.

Who We Are

Harry Meyering Center was established when state hospitals closed and opened in 1973 as a home for 44 individuals due to the efforts of the local ARC and parents of children with mental retardation. Parents involved in HMC's development sought to provide their adult children with a residential alternative to state institutions. The Harry Meyering Center was named after Harry Meyering, a former Minnesota State University, Mankato special education professor. Meyering, who was the first director of the Department of Special Education, was an early leader in the field of mental retardation. HMC is a non-profit organization, governed by a volunteer board of directors and consists of three programs: Intermediate Care Facility (ICF), Supportive Living Services (SLS), and Semi-Independent Living Services (SILS)/SLS In-Home. Harry Meyering Center has grown to serve approximately 150 individuals and employs about 300 staff members.

What We Do

It is the mission of the Harry Meyering Center to facilitate and support meaningful lifestyles for the people we serve. We make a difference in people's lives. The Harry Meyering Center aims to provide the people they serve and their families with services that encourage dreams, focus on independence, foster community connections, help people cope with life-changing events and offer special attention to safety, health needs and security. The Harry Meyering Center lives its philosophy that we are NOT a "residential provider," but we do support people in their homes to successfully direct their own lives and be full members of their community. The philosophy is detailed in HMC's 14 core values which are practiced in all aspects and on all levels of the agency. It is a living document making the Harry Meyering Center unique, exceptional and unmatched in supporting and advocating for the people we serve.
